POLK COUNTY, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help to identify the driver who fled the scene after hitting two cyclists earlier this month in an area east of Johnston and southwest of Saylorville.
The crash happened on November 3 at 2:45 p.m. on NW 26th Street near the intersection of NW 54th Avenue, according to the PCSO. Kathleen VanGundy, 69, and David VanGundy, 68, were riding their recumbent tricycles southbound on NW 26th Street when they tried to turn left onto NW 54th Avenue and were hit by a southbound vehicle.

Both were injured when they were thrown from their tricycles. Kathleen suffered minor injuries and David had serious injuries.
