New Iberia man sentenced to 30 years as habitual offender

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) — A New Iberia man has been declared a habitual offender and re-sentenced to 30 years in prison without the possibility of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.

Travis Layne Jr., 39, returned to the Iberia Parish Courthouse on Wednesday for a habitual-offender hearing. His original 30-year sentence for jury tampering, handed down earlier this month, was thrown out and replaced with a stricter version carrying no chance of early release.

The court found that Layne has four prior felony convictions, officially designating him as a habitual offender under Louisiana law. Those convictions include a 2022 case in which he attacked a school bus driver and pled guilty to second-degree battery, aggravated obstruction of a highway, and battery of a schoolteacher: all charges stemming from that same incident…
