East Providence gets closer to restricting use of e-bikes

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — After someone on an electric bicycle vandalized the new court at Kent Heights Park, the East Providence City Council has introduced an ordinance that would tighten restrictions on the use of e-bikes.

The council voted on Nov. 4 to give first passage to the new ordinance, which would restrict the use of e-bikes on sidewalks and other areas.

“We’re not going to allow you to ride that e-bike on our courts, on our parks, through our walkways,” East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “We have to be concerned about everyone’s safety.”

According to DaSilva, the cost of the damage from the vandalism could be in the thousands of dollars since the paint for those kinds of courts is expensive.

If the measure passes, East Providence police would have the power to impound any e-bike that’s used in violation of the ordinance and there could be a civil penalty of $500…
