In effort to prevent school shootings, Humble ISD adopts marshal program

HUMBLE, Texas — Humble ISD is preparing to launch a School Marshal Program after the district’s Board of Trustees voted Nov. 11 to move forward with the plan. The program is intended to deter school shootings and would become one part of the district’s broader campus security strategy.

The board’s decision allows administrators to begin writing regulations for how the program will operate. The district plans to pilot school marshals at selected campuses in the future, but details such as when or where that pilot will happen have not been determined. Marshals would serve only under rules adopted by the board.

The School Marshal Program is one of two options under Texas law that permit school employees to carry a weapon on campus. It differs from the Guardian Plan by requiring more extensive training and by being overseen by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement…
