Man sentenced to 52 years after holding family hostage in their home

DENVER (KDVR) — A man was sentenced to 52 years in prison after he held a child and two adults hostage in their home in 2022.

Rick Edward Murphy pleaded guilty to several felonies in September, including 2nd degree kidnapping, assault in the 2nd degree and criminal attempt to commit assault in the 1st degree, nearly three years after the incident.

On Dec. 12, 2022, Fort Collins Police Services confronted Murphy outside a home after a 911 call. Murphy, who knew the homeowners, pulled out a handgun and forced the homeowner inside, according to Larimer County. The homeowner’s wife and 8-year-old child were hiding while on the phone with the police as Murphy took the homeowner upstairs and held the family hostage.

Larimer County said the Fort Collins Police Services SWAT team and crisis negotiators were able to contact Murphy, who demanded that his brother, who also knew the victims, come to the scene before he released the hostages. The child was released, but Murphy continued to assault the two homeowners before eventually surrendering to law enforcement…
