Beloved Birmingham Zoo donkey Chaucer dies at age seven

Chaucer, a miniature donkey beloved by staff and visitors at the Birmingham Zoo, passed away Thursday morning. The 7-year-old donkey had been under veterinary care after showing signs of illness and a lack of interest in food. Despite efforts by the Alabama Wilds team and a specialized equine veterinarian, Chaucer’s condition did not improve, leading to his transfer to Coosa Valley Equine Center for round-the-clock care. He was later taken to Auburn University for a necropsy to determine the cause of death, with results expected in the coming weeks.

Chaucer arrived at the Birmingham Zoo on May 15, 2021, and quickly became a favorite among staff. Vaughn, one of Chaucer’s animal care professionals, shared fond memories of the donkey’s transformation from a shy and nervous newcomer to a beloved and mischievous member of the zoo community. “With the power of friendship and carrots, Chaucer truly flourished in our department,” Vaughn said. “Once Chaucer trusted you, he’d reward your efforts with a brief head pat or, if you were lucky, a few ear scratches.”…
