NJ Transit clears up confusion about ID’s for senior, disabled riders discounts

Senior citizens and disabled riders get reduced fares on NJ Transit by showing proof of age or, in the case of people with disabilities, an NJ Transit ID card.

But confusing information from the agency on social media alarmed some riders who thought only an NJ Transit ID card would be accepted starting Jan. 1. Currently driver’s licenses and other ID can be shown to verify a person’s age.

Rider confusion resulted after NJ Transit recently announced on Facebook and X that, “Beginning January 1, 2026, Reduced Fare ID cards without a photo will no longer be accepted for discounted travel on NJ Transit.”…
