New trial granted for man in first case reviewed by Lucas Co. Conviction Integrity Unit

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A judge has granted a new trial for a man at the center of the first case reviewed by the Lucas County Conviction Integrity Unit.

Court records show Joel Terry has been granted a new trial. Terry was sentenced to 75 years to life in prison for the rape of a child under 10 years old, though doubts about DNA evidence in the case led to the new developments.

Another test of the DNA found on the victim’s clothing shows that Terry’s DNA did not match what was left. At trial, a conclusive match was not made, but testimony from the victim identifying Terry as the suspect was introduced…
