KXAN (AUSTIN) — An Austin family and four others have now joined a wrongful death lawsuit accusing Camp Mystic of negligence in the July 4 deaths of their daughters, bringing the total number of families suing to 20.
Twenty-seven young campers and counselors died at the all-girls Christian summer camp in Kerr County during catastrophic flooding. The majority of those families are now seeking accountability in court, represented by four different law firms.
On Thursday, the family of Linnie McCown, 8, of Austin, joined one of the lawsuits filed by Arnold & Itkin, a Houston-based law firm now representing six families.
In September, wearing pink “Heaven’s 27” buttons, Linnie’s parents, Michael and Callie McCown, sat down for their first interview with KXAN. Both said they believed their daughter’s death was “100% preventable.”
Austin parents whose daughter died at Camp Mystic speak out
“I don’t like that my daughter had to die for this to take place,” Callie said after Gov. Greg Abbott signed a new law mandating new camp safety measures. “But I don’t ever want any other innocent child to die while they’re at summer camp because it should be the safest place they are. And, I don’t want any other parent to have to suffer the way that we have suffered these past two months and will suffer for the rest of our lives.”
