DES MOINES, Iowa — A 19-year-old Des Moines man was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Friday after admitting to shooting a woman with an AR-15 rifle earlier this year.
The incident took place in March 2025, Demonie Smith was reportedly arguing with his girlfriend near Boston Avenue and 26th Place, when his girlfriend’s sister intervened and approached the car, Smith then fired several gunshots from the rifle striking the sister.
According to the Polk County Attorney’s Office, the sister, Shanice Perry, was struck at least seven times and suffered three gunshots wounds to her back.
