Former D.A. Mark Gonzalez challenges Joe A. Gonzalez in Precinct 2 race

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Former Nueces County District Attorney Mark Gonzalez is seeking a return to public office, formally announcing Friday that he will run for the Precinct 2 seat on the Nueces County Commissioners Court.

Gonzalez previously served as district attorney from 2017 until 2023. He resigned in September 2023 to pursue a run for U.S. Senate, a candidacy he later ended. He now says he is asking voters for their support in March and wants to serve as “a voice for the people” in county government.

The current Precinct 2 commissioner, Joe A. Gonzalez, has also filed for re-election. He first won the seat in 2010 and represents rural and southwestern portions of Nueces County, including Bishop and Petronila. Before joining commissioners court, he spent years in public service, including time as a Justice of the Peace and earlier work in federal corrections and probation.
