EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) – A rabies alert was issued in Edmond after officials said they found a skunk in town that tested positive for the disease. Edmond Animal Services and the Department of Wildlife Conservation are issuing some important reminders to ensure you and your pets stay healthy.
“We hate to hear this report of rabies, but it’s unfortunately a good reminder, if you see wildlife whether it’s in your backyard or out in the woods don’t touch it, stay away from it,” Micah Holmes, spokesperson for the Dept. of Wildlife Conservation, said.

It’s a general warning for everyday life from Holmes. It rings a little truer since it comes as Edmond Animal Services posted to Facebook saying they received confirmation on a skunk testing positive for rabies this week. It was found in the area of 15th Street and Boulevard, a fairly busy spot. Edmond Animal Services said it’s a great reminder to make sure all pet vaccinations are up to date. It’s not only good for their health but required by law. Rabies can be fatal when symptoms appear, but it’s preventable through vaccination. Holmes said it can be in several other animals too.
