‘A little piece of home:’ ASD Indigenous Regalia Workshop kicks off Friday night

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The first of several Regalia Workshop Nights was held at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School on Friday, as a way to support indigenous students, or any students interested in Alaskan indigenous regalia.

Several of the students at the workshop were working on regalia that will be included in their graduation wear. Up until a couple years ago, cultural regalia was blocked from inclusion in graduation wear. Other students began work on pieces that will be included in the Indigenous fashion show, held at Bartlet High School each year.

“It’s important to at least know who you are and that you should have some of that culture in your life,” said student Isabell Murray. “To keep on… I feel like the new generation doesn’t show that much culture since, you know, technology and whatever. That’s why I joined back, because I feel like I lost that after high school started.”…
