NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the Volunteer State’s elderly population has suffered greatly from scams. Officials warned new technology has made it even easier for criminals to target seniors.
“People don’t wanna think that somebody would mistreat a senior adult, but it happens every day,” Investigator for the 27th Judicial District for District Attorney Colin Johnson, James Hatler, said.

Since October 2024, more than $34 million in losses have been reported to the TBI. Elder financial abuse has been fueled by more convincing scams and sometimes artificial intelligence, which is why law enforcement said education about scams is crucial. Officials are especially worried about Bitcoin ATMs, often found in gas stations and small markets.
