From Monterrey to Tulsa: Local Student’s Journey to Citizenship and Academic Success

Victor Guevara Gomez III moved from Monterrey, Mexico, to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2013. His mother, Marlene, an industrial engineer, relocated first to seek better opportunities. Victor and his younger brother Allen joined her a year later. Their father, Victor Jr., stayed in Mexico temporarily to manage family matters. The family aimed to provide better educational opportunities for the children.

Adjusting to life in Tulsa was challenging. Victor repeated the fourth grade to improve his English skills. Over time, both he and Allen adapted to their new environment. Their father later joined them and started a home-based landscaping equipment repair business. Victor attended Jenks High School, where he learned about Westminster College from an admissions representative. He received a scholarship and enrolled at Westminster in 2022.

At Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, Victor is double-majoring in political science and history, with minors in pre-law and global-transnational studies.
