Downtown Albuquerque residents’ complaints lead city to turn off anti-loitering speakers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Businesses and even city governments have turned to blasting music outside of buildings in recent times to discourage people from hanging out. Still, the latest spot where city officials used the tactic caused a stir, with loud music blaring downtown all night long. The speaker was loud enough that some neighbors accused the city of breaking its own noise ordinance rules. Now, officials say they’re pulling the plug on their idea.

Near Tijeras and Copper downtown, the city installed its newest speaker to keep people from loitering and camping out near a downtown pump station by the One Central apartments.

“We have about 14 of these all over the city. All of them are in urban areas like this. So, we’ve put these speakers on them to deter people from loitering around them and breaking in,” said Dan Mayfield, spokesperson for the Department of Municipal Development…
