A new shelter for veterans experiencing homelessness and recovering from substance use disorders will open in Portland this winter. The Thayer Family Foundation Veterans Shelter will provide 17 beds and supportive services. Its goal is to help veterans move to stable housing and long-term recovery. A preview event is scheduled for November 11, 2025, on Veterans Day. Local officials, Do Good Multnomah, Metro, the Thayer Family Foundation, and other partners will attend to present the shelter’s mission and services.
The shelter was created after feedback from veterans and staff at Do Good Multnomah. They identified a need for a safe, recovery-focused space for veterans. The Thayer Family Foundation Veterans Shelter will focus on voluntary sobriety. Participants can choose recovery and help shape the program. Daniel Hovanas, CEO of Do Good Multnomah, said the shelter’s approach is participant-driven and encourages veterans to work together.
Recent data shows veteran homelessness remains a challenge in the region. In August 2025, Multnomah County reported 16,089 people experiencing homelessness. Veterans made up 6% of this group. The 2025 tri-county Point in Time Count found that veteran homelessness is increasing in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties.
