Unlicensed driver with stolen tag stopped at McDonald’s in Leesburg

An Ocala man was arrested for driving with a stolen tag that he said was easy to get from Facebook Marketplace.

An officer got an alert about a stolen tag on a brown two-door Honda, later found to be driven by 28-year-old Christopher Lee Freeman, traveling northbound on U.S. Hwy. 27 and South Street around 7 p.m. Friday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

Dispatch confirmed the tag was stolen out of Ocala as the officer spotted the vehicle near the intersection with Shelfer Street. He subsequently stopped Freeman in the McDonald’s parking lot, located at 1012 N 14th St., the report said.

When asked how he got the tag, Freeman explained he knew he did not have a valid license. There were issues with the tag that was supposed to be assigned to the vehicle, so he bought one from an unknown person on Facebook Marketplace.
