Elected officials are urging NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to proceed with a disciplinary trial for Officer Wayne Isaacs over the 2016 fatal shooting of Delrawn Small. On Thursday, a rally was held outside police headquarters, accompanied by a letter signed by 33 politicians, including Comptroller Brad Lander, Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, calling for action. Last month, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Trials Rosemarie Maldonado recommended dismissing the charges against Isaacs, saying the CCRB does not have jurisdiction over off-duty incidents. According to Gothamist, there appears to be a contradiction in Isaacs’ defense: his attorneys claim he was not acting as a police officer to avoid discipline, while past federal court records show he argued the opposite to limit financial liability.
The push for Tisch to approve disciplinary proceedings gains urgency with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani set to take office. He has proposed shifting some police disciplinary power from the commissioner to other bodies, such as the CCRB.
