We love Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre (GSM) blends as they contain some of our absolute favorite varietals. Originating in the Rhone Valley of France, they can now be found everywhere, however you don’t see a lot of them from Napa Valley where Cab is King.
As we like to remind people, those beautiful Napa soils are good for growing a wide range of grapes, not just Cabernet. We like to give props to the vineyards willing to grow these other varieties when they could probably make more ripping them out and switching to Cabernet.
And not only is the region intriguing on this one, but also the blend with 70% smooth and ripe Grenache (the primary variety behind the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and 26% of the thick skinned, tannic Mourvedre grape (which we love) along with 4% Syrah.
