New York could be hit by another blast of Arctic air just in time for Thanksgiving as forecast models predict that a possible wobble in the polar vortex could push freezing air into the northern half of the nation.
The cold snap that hit the region early this week saw much of the Northeast experiencing the first significant snowfall of the season, including a foot of snow near Buffalo, but forecasters had warned that the early start to winter was merely a sign of more snowstorms to come. It’s unclear whether the next blast of Arctic air will be quite as powerful as this week’s, but the Climate Prediction Center has forecast below-average temperatures for roughly half the country through to the end of November.
According to the Climate Prediction Center, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) — a moving pattern of tropical thunderstorms — will combine with La Niña and negative North Pacific Oscillation to increase “cold air intrusion” and “promote colder than normal temperatures” for much of the north around Thanksgiving…
