Thanksgiving fire safety: Report reveals a 240% surge in cooking fires

TOLEDO, Ohio — Thanksgiving is typically a day to share joy with friends and family. But for many Americans, Thanksgiving can be one of worst days of the year for fire accidents.

According to a 2025 analysis from Safehome.org, Thanksgiving Day sees a 240% increase in residential cooking fires over any other day of the year.

Nationwide, an average of 87,877 residential cooking-related fires happen through out the year, according to the organization. Not only do these cooking fires cost about $570 million in property loss, but they also account for 39% of all residential fires…
