The beloved late-night horror film showcase, Gravesend Manor, is making a thrilling comeback to Iowa’s television screens, much to the delight of its dedicated fans. Originally debuting in the late 1950s, the program quickly captured the attention of audiences seeking spine-tingling entertainment in the 11:00 p.m. timeslot. Featuring a lineup of B-movie horror films and engaging locally-produced skits, the show became a staple of late-night viewing.
At the heart of Gravesend Manor were memorable characters brought to life by talented performers. Ed Weiss took on the role of Malcolm the Butler, while Jim Varnum portrayed the Duke of Desmodas. Their dynamic performances, alongside a quirky cast that included Claude the Great, Boris Kutyourheadoffsky, and a mysterious pair of hands belonging to Igor, added to the show’s unique charm.
Weiss, a Chicago native, settled in Des Moines after serving in World War II. His career in local media flourished as he became a commentator and producer for WOI-TV and radio.
