$201K lost in local fraud case

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Sioux Falls resident is out over $201,000 after falling victim to fraud.

According to the Sioux Falls Police Spokesman Sgt. Aaron Benson, a report came in Sunday afternoon about a woman who had been communicating with a man on a gaming app for two months.

The man said he needed assistance in getting a cell phone, and the victim sent $1,000 via PayPal to the man. The victim claimed suspicious activity in her email, such as not being able to send or receive messages, and sought IT help.

Benson said over the last few days, the victim then got calls from someone who claimed to be an FBI agent and talked to her about protecting her money and needing to send money to different accounts to secure her finances. The victim then made a couple of wire transfers, totaling $48,000 and was also instructed to put $5,500 into a Bitcoin ATM…
