Career & Tech Schools Recruit Veterans as Teachers

From chefs to auto mechanics– teachers at career & technical school need substantial experience in their industry before they can work in classrooms.

“We hire skilled tradesmen. They’ve got to have 8000 hours in paid work experience in that trade,” said Matt LaVerde, director at Erie County Technical School. The school has 21 programs where students can earn certificates, and LaVerde says their student population has almost doubled in size over the past five years.

Demand is up for career and tech educations, but keeping teacher positions filled is difficult…
