PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — On Friday, nearly 900 non-essential personnel flew home to Guantanamo Bay after three weeks of taking shelter at NAS Pensacola during the height of Hurricane Melissa.

Navy officials ordered the evacuation from Guantanamo Bay in late October as Hurricane Melissa approached the Caribbean. Those who were evacuated were immediately sent to NAS Pensacola for safety.
“Once we arrived at NAS Pensacola, the team did an amazing job,” said Naval Station Guantanamo Bay Command Master Kenneth Nixon. “The lift and the magnitude of this movement with short notice, they took very good care of us.”
