Police identify shoplifting suspect struck, killed on I-390 after fleeing Gates Aldi

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Gates Police have identified the man who died after fleeing an Aldi store last week and being struck by a vehicle on I-390 as 33-year-old Michael Hastings of Rochester.

Police first responded to the Spencerport Road Aldi on Nov. 13 just after noon for a reported larceny in progress. Investigators said Hastings ran from the store with a backpack of merchandise and headed east toward Lyell Avenue. Gates Police Chief Rob Long said officers frequently respond to similar theft reports.

“There is a lot of theft in our town and a lot of theft in Monroe County as well, and it’s really taxing for law enforcement as well as asset protection,” Long said at the time…
