On November 17, 2025, Florida Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas announced the Campus Guardian Angel Drone Pilot Program. The program will begin in three school districts: Broward, Leon, and Volusia. The initiative will use drones to help improve school safety. The drones can distract active shooters and send real-time audio and video to school guardians and law enforcement during emergencies.
The Guardian Angel Program will work with the Alyssa Alert platform, a mobile panic alert system used in Florida public schools. This integration is intended to support quick and coordinated responses to threats. Commissioner Kamoutsas stated that the goal is to maintain safe learning environments for students and teachers. He noted that the state is investing in new safety measures.
Local education leaders also supported the program. Dr. Howard Hepburn, Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, said the program could help schools respond faster to threats.
