ALBANY — Short-term rental hosts in Albany County will be required to register their properties and pay the county’s hotel occupancy tax under a proposed new law.
State lawmakers passed legislation last December allowing counties to create registries and collect hotel occupancy taxes on rooms rented on rental platforms, such as Airbnb and Vrbo. The proposed registry for Albany County would require hosts who rent out rooms or homes to file quarterly returns with the county’s commissioner of management and budget, along with payments for taxes collected during that time.
The law would require hosts to maintain records related to guest stays for two years. Those records would include the date, number of guests that were accommodated, and cost for each stay, and an itemization of the taxes collected…
