Two crews from the California Conservation Corps (CCC) recently worked with the Department of Water Resources (DWR) to install weather stations in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The project took place in the Stanislaus National Forest near Kennedy Meadows. The team included CCC members, environmental consultants, and a helicopter crew.
The operation started early in the morning. Professional packers loaded mules with equipment. CCC members from the Delta and Fresno centers hiked seven and eighteen miles, respectively, to reach the sites. For some participants, this was their first time working in remote backcountry areas.
At the sites, the teams and GEI environmental consultants dug pits for the weather station bases. A Black Hawk helicopter delivered heavy components to the locations. The crews then assembled the stations and installed sensors for data collection…
