Commission approves continued health benefits for injured deputy

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Commission approved extending health benefits to a deputy Monday who was seriously wounded in a motorcycle crash last year.

Sergeant Samuel Lilley was responding to a collision involving another deputy when he crashed in Lakeland.

He has undergone multiple surgeries and therapies, and Lilley’s medical benefits were about to run out, but the commission voted to keep the benefits going Monday night.

“But I’ll tell you, moving forward, we have to have a policy in place that protects all first responders in situations like this. Again October 15th, change Sgt. Lilley’s life forever, and these deputies behind me. The deputies who filled these chambers tonight they’re concerned about their safety as well. They’re concerned about what happens to them if a tragic incident like what happened to sgt lilley happens to them,” said Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner.

Lilley was sent to a rehab facility in Atlanta and then another in Texas and is still undergoing treatment…
