Former Bay Minette Officer Marcus Sledge, who resigned when Tolbert did, also joined the Sheriff’s Department. Both men were sworn in as deputies Monday.
Tolbert served as the chief of police in Bay Minette for eight years before stepping down on Nov. 3, the day the new mayor, Josh Brown, was sworn in. Tolbert said he made the decision after “discussions regarding the city’s leadership and direction,” and felt it was appropriate that he step down to “allow for a smooth transition under the new administration.”
Tolbert began his law enforcement career at the Bay Minette Police Department as a patrol officer and was promoted several times before leaving for the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office in 2007. There, he worked in several capacities before returning to the Bay Minette Police Department.
