Verdigre Residents Collaborate on New Community Projects Through Rural Prosperity Nebraska Program

In the summer of 2025, residents of Verdigre, Nebraska, participated in the Entrepreneurial Communities Activation Process (ECAP). The program, organized by Rural Prosperity Nebraska, aimed to help local citizens identify community strengths, set priorities, and develop action plans. Village clerk Heidi Ruzicka highlighted the importance of working together for community growth.

During three meetings, residents took part in surveys, data walks, and discussions. They identified community pride and strong connections as strengths. They also noted challenges, including limited housing, child-care shortages, and a lack of gathering spaces. Rural Prosperity Nebraska Extension educators led the process, which included reviewing past projects and brainstorming new ideas.

Stacy Miller, Knox County’s director of tourism and economic development, said the program encouraged participation and idea sharing. Suggestions included starting a local investment club, building a wellness center, and creating a historical walk on Main Street.
