Owensboro organizations unite to address hunger and homelessness

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The OHRC, The Pitino Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, St. Benedict’s Shelter and Homeless Coalition of Ohio Valley are recognizing Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Week during November 16 through 22, which is a nationwide week of action where people draw attention to poverty.

Organizers note staff and volunteers will spend the week holding educational sessions, community service, fundraising and advocacy events to address these critical issues.

Owensboro investors acquire KBio, future plans in review

“Hunger and homelessness are epidemics that sadly affect too many members of our community,” said Reverend Rhondalyn Randolph, Interim Executive Director, Owensboro Human Relations Commission. “We’re working together and organizing Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week to help concerned citizens tackle these issues head on, rally public support and call for long-term solutions.”

Organizers say Owensboro’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week will include these events:

  • Property Owners Roundtable, Monday, November 17, 2025, 11to 1 p.m. Logsdon Center, 2400 Friendship Drive in Owensboro.
  • “Faces of Homelessness” Panel Discussion on November 18, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Blandford Hall on OCTC Main Campus
  • Renters Support Informational Session, November 18, 2025, 10 to 12 p.m. HL Neblett Center, 801 West 5th St. in Owensboro.

According to the group, the poverty rate in Owensboro is 19.9%, which breaks down to 17.7% for White Non-Hispanic residents, 26.5% for Black residents, 32.4% for Hispanic or Latino residents, 51.5% for Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander residents, 35.5% for other race residents, 19.6% for two or more races residents and 25.6% among disabled residents. The number of children living below the poverty level in Owensboro is 39.0%…
