On November 18, 2025, the Sugar Land City Council approved a contract to begin repairs on the Imperial Sugar Char House. The building is about 100 years old and is located in the Imperial Historic District. The council agreed to a $496,000 contract with Urbano Architects, a Houston firm that works on historic buildings. The project will use funds from a $50 million Certificate of Obligation approved in April 2025.
Mayor Carol McCutcheon said the project aims to preserve the Char House as part of the city’s history. The first phase will address repairs to the roof, windows, and structure to prevent further damage. Urbano Architects previously completed a condition analysis of the building in 2020 and 2021, which will guide the current work.
Community input has influenced plans for the Imperial Historic District. Visioning sessions held from November 3 to 6, 2025, collected feedback from residents, businesses, and other stakeholders.
