Jefferson Parish deputy arrested, accused of smuggling drugs into Gretna jail

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested Tuesday morning and booked with malfeasance in office after allegedly trying to smuggle illegal drugs into the Gretna jail, according to authorities.

Darius Johnson, 25, was also booked with having contraband in the correctional center, conspiracy to introduce contraband in the correctional center and attempted drug distribution, said Sgt. Brandon Veal, spokesperson for the department.

He is accused of trying to smuggle synthetic marijuana into the jail. Johnson was fired, Veal said. He’d been with the department for about 1½ years, assigned to inmate security at the jail.

The Sheriff’s Office did not disclose what led authorities to open the investigation. Veal said additional arrests are possible…
