Sentences issued for individuals involved in Western Iowa murder case

EARLING, Iowa (KTIV) – Winston Leal and Ashley McWilliams, who authorities say were involved in the death of Theresa Kenkel in Shelby County, have received their sentences.

According to court documents, Winston Leal pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, which was amended from first-degree. He was sentenced on Oct. 29 to 50 years in prison with time served. He was also ordered to pay $150,000 in pecuniary damages.

Ashley McWilliams pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and was sentenced to two years of probation. She was additionally ordered to pay a civil penalty of $1,025 plus court costs.

These charges stem from a shooting on July 31, 2025, at a residence in Earling, Iowa.
