Age and genetics are major factors in heart disease that cannot be changed, according to David McWhorter, a cardiology physician associate at Salem Health. He states that other causes, such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and sleep apnea, can often be managed with appropriate care.
McWhorter points to the value of lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and regular exercise. He recommends the Mediterranean diet, which includes fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and limits processed foods. For exercise, he suggests 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity five days a week, with mild breathlessness and sweating as signs of adequate effort.
