Waikiki restaurants struggle as tourism lags and costs rise

WAIKIKI, Hawaii (Island News) — “It is the worst I’ve seen in about two years,” said Mike Palmer, managing partner of Kuhio Avenue Food Hall. “Things have just slowed down significantly.”

Hawaii restaurants, especially in Waikiki, are struggling to make ends meet with rising costs and fewer customers ahead of the holiday season.

“People are a little more cautious. They want to hang onto their money right now,” Palmer said. “All the restaurants, all the hotels are competing for the same customer so there’s just less customers to go around.”

The recent federal government shutdown, which led to airlines cancelling flights, has only made things worse…
