HONOLULU (KHON2) — When you hear a siren or see a parked emergency vehicle with the lights flashing, move over. It’s the law.
In honor of National Crash Responder Safety Week, first responders put on a demonstration of an emergency situation to walk through the process, highlighting the importance of slowing down and moving over.

Hawaii’s move over law states that when coming up on an emergency vehicle stopped for an emergency, drivers must:
- “Slow down to a reasonable and prudent speed that is safe under the circumstances of an emergency road situation ahead.”
- “Make a lane change into the adjacent lane if necessary and if it is safe to do so, or if possible, to two lanes over which leaves one lane between the driver and the emergency vehicle.”
“It gives us a safety buffer,” said Captain Brandon Yamamoto of the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division on the importance of the move over law. “It gives the driver further reaction time to react to any situations, and it’s all for the safety of those involved.”
