Beloved Boston bartender who inspired ‘Cheers’ character faces health challenge

Eddie Doyle was the heart and soul of the world’s most famous bar. Now the man who inspired the hit show “Cheers” is facing a health challenge, and his friends are reaching out for help.

Doyle tended bar at the Bull & Finch Pub on Beacon Street for decades. The legend goes, when the bar changed its name to “Cheers,” two producers walked in, met Doyle, and the rest is history.

But that’s only part of the story. For years, Doyle has led fundraising efforts have raised thousands for scores of charities, including Cheers for Children, The Neely House and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. It started when he was a young boy…
