In 2024, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) completed the Collier to Polk Trail Master Plan. This plan outlines a multi-use trail from Collier County to Polk County. The project, called the Florida Heartland Regional Trail, will provide a paved path for bicyclists and pedestrians. It is intended to improve regional connectivity and recreational access in central and southern Florida.
The Hardee County section of the trail is under review. Proposed routes range from 27 to 37 miles. This segment would extend from the Highlands County Line to W. County Line Road at the Polk County border. Most route options follow major roads, including State Road 66, U.S. 17, Steve Roberts Special, State Road 64, S. Florida Avenue, local roads, and the Peace River. The routes are planned to link towns, parks, and local sites, supporting community access and tourism.
The Florida Greenways and Trails Council has named the Florida Heartland Regional Trail a regionally significant trail.
