Hinds County asks cities to help with jail overcrowding costs

RAYMOND, Miss. (WJTV) – The Hinds County jail system is running well over capacity, and county leaders said the cost of housing inmates out of county is putting a serious strain on taxpayers.

The Hinds County Detention Center, located in Raymond, is holding about 200 more inmates than it was built for. Another 200 inmates are being housed in Tallahatchie County to manage the overflower. Each inmate sent to Tallahatchie costs $67 per day.

“Every day, pretty much now, we are running in excess of 900 pretrial detainees in our custody. And as you can see, this is putting a strain financially on the county, as well as the detention services for the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office,” said Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones…
