SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield Police Department launched a new unit this week focused on working with those experiencing homelessness.
The new Street Outreach Team currently has two officers assigned and began their duties on Nov. 17. The team has three primary goals:
- Engaging with individuals and connecting them with local programs and services
- Encouraging the use of available resources to support long-term stability
- Enforcing applicable state and municipal laws, when necessary, to maintain public safety
“Our goal with the Street Outreach Team is simple. We’re meeting people where they are and connecting them with the help they need,” said Police Chief Paul Williams in a press release. “This is about compassion and partnership to offer meaningful support while maintaining public safety.”
