Fred Upton to speak at University of Michigan winter commencement, receive honorary doctorate

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WOOD) — Longtime Congressman Fred Upton will serve as the main speaker for the the University of Michigan’s upcoming winter commencement and receive an honorary doctorate.

The university announced the decision last week. Upton, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from U-M in 1975, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws for his decades of service in the federal government.

Upton began his career in Washington as a staffer for former Congressman David Stockman and followed him to the Office of Management and Budget in 1981. He won his own election to the House of Representatives in 1986 and held the seat until 2023…
