Judge rejects bond change for teen charged in Buncombe County shooting death

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — On Wednesday, Nov. 19, District Court Judge Edwin Clontz rejected a Buncombe County prosecutor’s request to modify the $100,000 bond set for 18-year-old Izaiah Smith-Sheridan.

Smith-Sheridan is charged with shooting and killing 44-year-old Jonathan Torres on Friday, Nov. 14. Smith-Sheridan bonded out of jail on Monday, Nov. 17.

Under North Carolina law, defendants are entitled to a bond even if charged with first-degree murder. Attorneys confirm judges have discretion if a defendant can be released or have a bond set before trial…
