Polar Night begins in Alaska town, where the sun won’t be seen for next 64 days

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The phenomenon known as “Polar Night” kicked off Tuesday in Utqiagvik, Alaska (formerly known as Barrow).

The city is home to nearly 5,000 people and is the northernmost community in the United States, lying more than 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

The sun set at 1:56 p.m. local time and will not be seen again until Jan. 22, when it rises at 1:23 p.m. that day…
