CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Brittney Washington has been named the 2025 Lowcountry Artist of the Year by the Coastal Community Foundation, with her winning series unveiled at the Cannon Street Arts Center.
Washington’s winning work, titled “Saltwater Lineage: Portraits of the Tides,” celebrates Gullah Geechee culture and the connection between people and the Lowcountry environment.
“The series is called ‘Saltwater Lineage: Portraits of the Tides’ and essentially it is my love letter to the folks from this area,” Washington said.

The Orangeburg native said painting has always been her language for expression.
