Downtown Durham Gets First Public DC Fast Charger to Support Local EV Drivers

On November 18, 2024, the City of Durham, North Carolina, and Kempower opened the first public DC fast charger in downtown Durham. The charging station is at 111 W. Chapel Hill Street. City officials say this is part of efforts to support electric vehicle (EV) use and environmental sustainability.

This is the first DC fast charger in Durham’s Downtown Loop. It is located near restaurants, shops, and attractions. Duke Energy powers the project, and the State of North Carolina provided partial funding through the Volkswagen Settlement. The station has two charging plugs and uses Kempower’s technology for fast and reliable charging.

Mayor Leonardo Williams said the project will help reduce the city’s carbon footprint and support local jobs. Kempower’s North America President, Monil Malhotra, said the company plans to expand charging solutions in North America, with Durham as a key location…
