COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Wexner Medical Center nurses are set to protest leadership at the Ohio State University hospital on Wednesday night with a rally about workplace violence.
The gathering by members and supporters of the Ohio State University Nurses Organization follows union outrage after a nurse was allegedly strangled by a visitor. After NBC4’s coverage, hospital employees from around the country reached out to share their own experiences with workplace violence, which emergency professionals said is on the rise.

“Emergency departments must remain safe environments where patients can rely on the full focus and expertise of their care teams,” Christina Campana, president of the Ohio chapter of ACEP, the American College of Emergency Physicians, said. “Ohio’s emergency physicians deserve workplaces where they can save lives without fear for their personal safety.”
Campana pointed to a January 2024 ACEP poll of 1,980 emergency physicians nationwide, where 91% of respondents said they had been threatened or attacked at work in 2023.
